Nothing in Cognitive Neuroscience Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution

چکیده
Evolutionary theory should be a fundamental guide for neuroscientists. This would seem trivial statement, but I believe that taking it seriously is more complicated than appears to be, as argue in this article. Elsewhere, proposed the notion of “bounded functionality” As way describe constraints considered when trying understand evolution brain. There are two bounded-functionality essential any evolution-minded approach cognitive neuroscience. The first constraint, bricoleur describes evolutionary pressure adaptive solution re-use relevant resources available system before selection situation appeared. second satisficing fact trait only needs behave advantageously its competitors order selected. In paper how can inform an evolutionary-minded do so, resort Nikolaas Tinbergen’s four questions about behavior, namely: function, causation, development and evolution. bottom line assuming neuroscience intrinsically tentative, slow, messy.

متن کامل"Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution": Theodosius Dobzhansky: 1900-1975.
Theodosius Dobzhansky (1900-1975) was one of the principal architects of the so-called synthetic theory of evolution. Born and initially trained in Russia, where he became an entomologist and zoologist with wide-ranging interests, he brought a rich background in systematics and study of natural populations with him when he came to the United States to learn genetics in the laboratory of T. H. M...
متن کاملNothing Makes Sense in Computing Except in the Light of Evolution
Most work on computation deals with its structural aspects—what it is composed of, how the individual elements work in isolation and how they are connected to one another, how best they can be implemented by a physical systems, etc.—in sum, it concerns itself with a proximate account of computation’s mechanisms. We argue that, though that kind of work is of course indispensable, computation can...

The good sheik evidently holds the Copernican theory to be a "mere theory," not a "fact." In this he is technically correct. A theory can be verified by a mass of facts, but it becomes a proven theory, not a fact. The sheik was perhaps unaware that the Space Age had begun before he asked the king to suppress the Copernican heresy. The sphericity of the earth has been seen by astronauts, and eve...
متن کاملNothing in Glycobiology Makes Sense, except in the Light of Evolution
The remarkable structural diversity of glycans in nature, and their roles in cellular processes, host-pathogen interactions, biological diversity and speciation can be explained by evolutionary processes.
